What are in-box desiccants?

The term in-box desiccant is derived from the English "in a box" and thus describes its central location of use: inside product or transport packaging. This refers to desiccants in bag form that are added to the packaging unit to control humidity in the packaging space and protect sensitive products from moisture damage – for example, in cartons, crates, folding boxes, or shipping packaging.
Space-saving and placed directly with the product, in-box desiccants absorb excess moisture from the surrounding air and thus stabilize the climatic conditions within the packaging. Their effect unfolds exactly where moisture can most affect the quality of a product – in direct proximity to the packaged goods.

The sources of moisture that can impair the quality of goods are diverse, ranging from residual moisture in the goods and packing aids to moisture in the air and moisture that penetrates through the barrier layer. The result is often damage such as mold, corrosion, clumping, or detached labels. Desiccants for use within the packaging offer a simple and effective way to minimize such risks at an early stage – both during storage and transport.

Typical application areas include the shipping and storage of electronics, machine and metal components, pharmaceutical products, textile materials, and food packaging. In-box desiccants are suitable for both internal material flow and international shipping – especially when climatic fluctuations, long transport times, or sensitive packaging place special demands on product protection.

What advantages do in-box desiccants offer?

In-box desiccants allow for targeted regulation of humidity directly within the packaging. By adding them directly, typical moisture damage can be effectively avoided. The choice of the right product depends on the respective application and environmental conditions.
The classic among desiccants within shipping packaging is the well-known silica gel bag. Usually in combination with an additional barrier layer, such as an airtight PE bag, they offer proven moisture protection under controlled conditions. Like DIN 55473 desiccant bags, which are used in exports, for example, an additional sleeve is the basic requirement for the function of these standard desiccant variants.

However, for more resource-efficient packaging design, such additional sleeves are increasingly being omitted – whether for ecological reasons or due to process optimization. At the same time, there are applications where a higher dehumidification performance is required than classic silica gel solutions can provide. This is where modern high-performance desiccants for in-box application come into play.

High-performance desiccants for in-box application

The new ThoMar high-performance desiccant BoxDryy® features a specially coordinated combination of active ingredients, which allows for an absorption capacity many times higher than that of a standard desiccant – without an additional protective layer. BoxDryy® combines maximum performance with the requirement for sustainable packaging concepts – and thus sets new standards in the field of modern in-box desiccants. It not only offers exceptionally high protection against moisture but also contributes to the reduction of packaging materials.
Unlike many classic desiccants, no additional moisture-inhibiting outer packaging is required for the high-performance desiccant. The product also works reliably in open-breathing packaging such as cartons or crates – without any plastic barrier layers or multi-layer films. In this way, material usage can be significantly reduced without having to compromise on the safety of goods and products.
