Case study:
liquid absorber as leakage protection
The highest safety requirements must be observed when transporting and handling liquid samples. Even the smallest leaks can disrupt processes and lead to significant damage. In this case study, we show how we developed a suitable solution for this demanding application together with our customer.
Customer Application
Liquid absorbers are used for the specification-compliant, safe transport of collected urine or blood samples as part of anti-doping testing. The absorber sachets are part of a test kit. This kit includes safety bags in which sample containers are packed together with absorber sachets containing 1.5 g. The kits are assembled by machine.
Challenge
The customer sought a change of supplier in order to source absorber sachets from a manufacturer based and producing in Europe/Germany. The change is subject to a change process according to GMP.
Compliance with physical properties/specifications regarding the product design is essential for the customer. Specifications exist for filling weight, dimensions, and printing of the absorber sachet. In addition, absorber performance (speed) and absorber capacity (absorption volume) are defined.
Process
To develop the first liquid absorber from ThoMar, various raw materials were selected by product management, processed, and tested based on a test plan.
In addition to optimal function, the long-term availability of the raw materials was decisive for the selection. The focus of the tests was the determination of the absorber performance and the absorber capacity with aqueous/saline solutions (reference medium).
Solution
Product Development
Development of the new product "Made in Germany" with production at the ThoMar site in Lütau. The development was carried out within the framework of processes according to ISO 9001.
Provision of a pilot series
To test the effectiveness and the packaging of the product on the customer's machines, a pilot series was provided, which was successfully tested.
