What types of silica gel packets are available?
ThoMar’s Desi Dry silica gel packets are available as standard in tested industrial quality in the following versions:

Low-dust packet material: 0.5 g, 1 g, 2 g, 5 g, 10 g, 30 g, 60 g, 100 g and 250 g
Dust-proof packet material: 0.5 g, 1 g, 2 g, 5 g, 10 g, 30 g and 60 g
Orange (silica gel with visual saturation indicator): 1 g, 5 g and 10 g

 
Silica gel packets for food
We also stock packet variants with dust-proof casing material that have been tested and confirmed for compliance with food legislation. There are no objections to the use of the tested products in direct contact with food within the meaning of European Framework Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004, European Plastics Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 and Sections 30 and 31 of the German Food and Feed Code (LFGB). The desiccant packets are suitable for protecting foods from moisture, including cereal products, sugar and solid sugar products, nuts, milk powder, spices and many more.

Where and how are silica gel packets used?
The small packets filled with silica gel are ideal companions for sensitive goods because they can be placed directly inside product packaging. Silica gel packets protect your goods, from electrical equipment and leather goods to textiles and packaged foods, against moisture damage during transport and storage. Because the silica gel packets absorb moisture from the air inside the packaging, condensation cannot form when they are used correctly. This helps prevent mold, corrosion, softened cardboard packaging, and changes in odor and taste.
How silica gel works as a desiccant
The silica gel contained in the packets consists of spherical, microporous beads. The glass-like beads consist of approximately 98% silicon dioxide. Due to its large internal surface area, silica gel is highly effective at adsorbing large amounts of moisture. Silica gel is hygroscopic, which means that it can bind water molecules to its surface. The water remains chemically unchanged and can easily be released again during regeneration, i.e. drying of the silica gel. Silica gel packets can absorb approximately one third of their own weight in moisture.
What does low-dust / dust-proof casing material mean?
The casing material of Desi Dry silica gel packets – low-dust – consists of a composite of paper and nonwoven material that combines the positive properties of both materials. The packet is more dust-proof than conventional nonwoven material, which means that abrasion produces only a small amount of dust that could pass through the outer material. At the same time, it is more tear-resistant than paper, making it an ideal solution for applications where a choice must be made between paper and nonwoven material. The PE coating between the nonwoven material and the paper also ensures strong, reliable sealing seams.

The casing material of Desi Dry silica gel packets – dust-proof – consists of a so-called HDPE nonwoven material (high-density polyethylene). The absence of exposed fiber ends reduces abrasion and therefore the formation of dust. The nonwoven material is permeable to water vapor and extremely tear-resistant. It retains its properties both when wet and dry and is resistant to most acids, alkalis and salts.

Desi Dry Orange consists of 90% whitish, colorless silica gel and 10% orange-colored silica gel. From a moisture content of approximately 6%, the orange beads begin to turn green. As the desiccant continues to absorb moisture, the green color becomes more intense until it is fully saturated. A green-blue color indicates complete saturation. A special transparent and highly tear-resistant nonwoven material allows the saturation level of the desiccant to be checked visually. This eliminates the need to weigh the desiccant to determine its saturation level.
