You have already decided to make desiccants part of the load securing so that your goods arrive at their destination without moisture damage. How can you now check the effect of this quality assurance measure? Or do you want to check whether the climate exceeds certain limits during long-term storage inside a barrier envelope?

For this purpose, so-called data loggers are suitable, which digitally document the course of temperature and relative humidity for a defined period of time. In addition, there is a simpler version of humidity indicators that show by discolouration when certain humidity values are exceeded in the packaging.

Characteristics of data loggers

ThoMar offers you data loggers for your test project, e.g. container transport with and without the use of desiccants, or for permanent climate control. These are used for the transport and storage of all kinds of goods in containers or inside packaging. You can use the logger to evaluate the exact course of temperature and humidity during your logistics project and, if necessary, take further measures to reduce humidity. Especially with sensitive products, it is important to monitor temperature and humidity in order to find out whether the use of (further) desiccants is necessary.

Application of data loggers

Data loggers are very easy to use and are fixed in the container e.g. before the start of transport and the recording is started by pressing a button. At the end, another push of a button stops the recording, the logger is plugged into the USB port of your computer, and a report on the recording period is automatically generated. We will be happy to advise you before use, also with regard to limit values applicable to your specific product, e.g. for mould growth or corrosion, and recommend the appropriate desiccant to you.

Characteristics of humidity indicators

Humidity indicators serve as a means to check the climate within a confined space, i.e. some kind of packaging. They indicate the relative humidity within a barrier layer.

A humidity indicator consists of particular kind of indicator paper prepared with a thin layer of the chemical combination cobalt (ii )chloride. Cobalt (ii) chloride is blue when in an anhydrous condition. When the paper absorbs humidity from the ambient air, the cobalt (ii) chloride als gets moist. With the degree of moisture increasing, it changes its colour from blue via violet to pink.

The relative humidity within the barrier layer can be read off the impregnated areas of the indicator paper. Its value is shown in percent. Thus you can check if the critical value for the repective product has been exceeded.

Application of humidity indicators

Humidity indicators are mainly used when export packaging needs to be transported in a freight container for an extended amount of time, and through different climate zones. When storing and shipping moisture-sensitive goods, raw materials, electronical equipment, and pharmaceutical products, the use of humidity indicators can be beneficial as well.
