Guide: protect household goods during a move from moisture damage with desiccants

Emigrating to New Zealand, Thailand, Brazil or the Caribbean? We regularly receive enquiries from private individuals as well as companies in the removals logistics sector who want to keep shipping containers with emigrants’ entire household goods dry during the long journey. The aim is to protect sensitive furniture, appliances and personal items from the most common moisture damage.

Protect household goods from moisture during a move

Challenge: moisture protection for household goods over long transport distances

Wooden and upholstered furniture, metal kitchen equipment, electronic devices, clothing, shoes, decorative items and works of art must be reliably protected during transport from moisture, mould, rust and odours. Especially on long journeys, an effective yet uncomplicated solution is required.

Solution: the ThoMar checklist for effective moisture protection for household goods

Below are some recommendations to ensure that the start in your dream destination is not spoiled by mould, rust, mildew stains and musty odours when you open the container.

  • A combination of a high-performance desiccant (here: SeaDry based on salt and starch) – for use in the container – and a so-called inbox desiccant (here: CertiDry in accordance with DIN 55473 / contains clay granules) – for use inside the moving boxes – offers the best protection.
  • Use packing materials such as moving boxes in as dry a condition as possible. Paper / cardboard absorbs moisture depending on the ambient climate; if necessary, dry beforehand in the boiler room.
  • Line moving boxes, for example, with sturdy plastic film bags / refuse sacks. Place packed goods inside together with CertiDry desiccant according to DIN 55473 (Type A, 4 DU or 8 DU, 1-2 bags per box). Close bags (first press out the air) and seal the moving boxes. Tape up the hand holes to prevent further, possibly moist air from entering.
  • Before loading, equip the container with SeaDry container desiccant; for this application, the SeaDry Pole H 1.2 kg variant is particularly suitable. Simply hang the desiccant along the lashing eyes on the long sides of the shipping container (10 pieces per 20-foot container / 20 pieces per 40-foot container). Overseas transports by private individuals often take three months or longer. With this amount of SeaDry, the household goods remain reliably protected until arrival.
  • Take an additional box of SeaDry Pole H with you in the shipping container. After arrival, check the saturation level of the hanging desiccants (check by weighing: at a weight of approx. 3.6 kg, a SeaDry Pole H is saturated). If the house or apartment is not yet ready for occupancy on arrival and the load has to remain in the shipping container for longer, use additional SeaDry desiccants if necessary.
  • All desiccants can be disposed of in residual waste after the move is complete.

SeaDry desiccants for containers and CertiDry desiccants in accordance with DIN 55473 are available in the ThoMar webshop or on Amazon.
