Wearing a filtering facepiece (FFP) can reduce the risk of harmful aerosols being emitted or absorbed through the air we breathe for the wearer and those around them. To protect so-called particle-filtering half-masks from excessive humidity during transport and storage, a ThoMar customer uses Desi Dry silica gel packets enclosed in the foil bag serving as subpackaging.
Silica gel packets are enclosed in the packaging of FFP masks.
Keeping Lab Test Kits Dry
ThoMar OHG supplies several manufacturers of corona tests with desiccants. According to the manufacturers, test kits from Germany are shipped worldwide. Each test-kit is enclosed in an airtight sealed edge bag made of composite film with a silica gel packet in pharmaceutical quality. The desiccant particularly protects the sensitive detection reagent from excessive humidity during the entire logistics chain.
Reagents, e.g. for the detection of Sars-CoV-2, are very sensitive to moisture.
Keeping Animal Feed Dry
A manufacturer of special feeds for farm animals produces, among other things, tablets that are individually packed in aluminium composite bags. The tablets are produced at 20% relative humidity and are highly hygroscopic. The project manager turned to the ThoMar team because the tablets absorbed too much of the ambient moisture during transport and storage and crumbled when removed from the bag. After an initial test (adding desiccant to the outer carton) did not show sufficient effect, it was finally decided to pack 20 of the individual tablet bags in another aluminium composite bag and to enclose a Desi Dry silica gel packet.
A desiccant is enclosed with each of the outer packaging bags.
Moisture Protection for Injection Moulded Parts
Injection moulded plastic elements are very sensitive to moisture. If these parts attract moisture, they change their shape. Particularly in the automotive industry, tolerances regarding the accuracy of fit of individual components are very small. The addition of suitable desiccants, e.g. Desi Dry silica gel packets into the PE or aluminium composite bag in which the articles are packed, during shipping and storage reduces the risk of customer complaints.
Injection moulded parts are sensitive to moisture and should be protected by desiccants during shipping and storage.
Moisture Protection for 3D Printing Filaments
Plastic is the most common print material in 3D printers. For a printer using fused deposition modeling technology the plastic is placed in the printer in the form of a so-called filament reel. When these filaments absorb moisture the 3D printer can no longer optimally process them. Therefore we advise you to use a suitable desiccant when you ship or store these materials. Our Desi Dry silica gel packets are available in various pouch sizes and materials.
Desiccants ensure consistently good quality during storage and transport of 3D filaments.
Glass Corrosion on Optical Lenses
One of our customers specialises in precision optics; the products are used worldwide in measuring, laser and aerospace technology, among others. The person responsible for the process approached us with the problem that glass corrosion occurred on optical lenses manufactured in a clean room during intermediate storage. This was caused by excessive humidity in the storage containers.
He conducted tests on the release of particles between 0.3 µm and 5 µm with Desi Dry silica gel packets, both with low-dust and dust-proof pouch material. Both types of bags were first moved in the hand at a distance of 5 cm from a measuring head and then shaken vigorously. As a result, the Desi Dry silica gel packets with a dust-proof pouch showed an average particle emission up to 28 times lower than the version with a low-dust pouch - the right desiccant for our customer's sensitive products.
Optical lenses should be protected against glass corrosion caused by excessive humidity.
In small product packagings or if the goods underpacked in film are packed in cardboard boxes or on export crates, electrical goods, household goods, car parts, food, leather goods, machine parts, medical products, metal parts, furniture, injection moulded parts, textiles, 3D-printing filaments, etc. should be protected from moisture damage during storage and transport. To prevent mould, electrical damage, corrosion, mildew stains or bad odours from occurring inside the packaging, so-called inbox desiccants are used.
For one thing, our Desi Dry silica gel packets, which are available in various bag sizes, wrapping materials, with and without saturation indicator, are suitable for this purpose. Or you can use our CertiDry desiccant according to DIN 55473. The latter contain dry clay and their minimum absorption capacity, the packaging units or even the labelling are stipulated in the above-mentioned standard.
