Mould on packaging and packing aids

When transporting machine parts in a shipping container from Europe to North America, our customer experienced mould growth on packaging and packing aids. To identify the causes and develop effective countermeasures, test shipments with data loggers and a comprehensive process analysis were carried out.

Challenge: Exceeded mould threshold and pre-contaminated packing materials

During transport, the critical mould threshold was exceeded for a long time. In addition, there was an increased moisture content in the packaging and packing aids, especially in pallets and dunnage wood that had already been pre-contaminated before loading. The combination of these factors led to visible mould infestation and made countermeasures imperative.

Solution: Combination of suitable SeaDry container desiccants

Several SeaDry Pole H desiccant chains were evenly attached to the lashing eyes in the shipping container, while compact SeaDry Single desiccant bags were used in the shipping crates. This distribution ensured that the humidity inside the shipping container reliably remained below the critical mould threshold.

Result: Sustainable reduction of moisture damage and process optimisation

The use of desiccants prevented the critical humidity level for mould growth from being exceeded again. Visible moisture damage, such as dark spots on the wood, hardly occurred anymore. In addition, the company optimised other shipping processes: among other things, kiln-dried wood is now used consistently, which has definitively resolved the mould problem during the transport of machine parts.
